The Crew sign Argentine midfielder Lautaro Giaccone on loan from Argentinos Juniors

The Columbus Crew officially announced on Monday that the Black & Gold have acquired Argentine midfielder Lautaro Giaccone on loan from the top-flight Argentine club Argentinos Juniors. The 25-year-old playmaker, who will occupy an international roster spot, will join the Crew immediately when the secondary transfer window officially opens on July 13, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.

The loan agreement will see Giaccone play for Columbus through June 2027. Crucially for the Crew’s long-term roster construction, the deal includes a club option to make the transfer permanent at the conclusion of the loan period. This structure gives the Black & Gold front office a significant runway to evaluate how Giaccone adapts to the tactical demands of MLS and the club’s specific system before committing to a permanent transfer fee.

“Lautaro is a creative, dynamic player who can contribute to our Club in multiple ways,” Crew general manager Issa Tall said in the press release announcing the signing. “Lautaro’s versatility and abilities fit our style of play on both sides of the ball, and we are excited to incorporate him into our team.”

Giaccone arrives in Columbus as a highly versatile attacking option. Standing at 5-foot-8 and possessing a cultured left foot, he has built a reputation in Argentina as a creative and dynamic presence in the final third. Throughout his professional career, he has demonstrated the ability to operate effectively across multiple attacking roles. While he is most frequently deployed as a right winger or an attacking midfielder, he is equally comfortable drifting out to the left flank or operating in central pockets of space.

His statistical profile highlights a player who excels at linking play and creating high-quality chances. Across his time in the Argentine Primera División, Giaccone has shown a knack for breaking down low-block defenses through clever dribbling, precise cross-field distribution, and a willingness to take shots from distance.

Born in San Francisco, Argentina, in 2001, Giaccone is a graduate of the prestigious Rosario Central Academy. He broke into the senior team in January 2021, marking the beginning of a steady ascent in Argentine football. During his tenure at Rosario Central, which lasted until 2025, he accumulated 92 appearances, netting eight goals and providing 11 assists.

In 2022, seeking consistent first-team minutes to further his development, he spent a productive loan spell at Ferro Carril Oeste in the Primera Nacional. There, he featured in 28 matches, scoring two goals and recording four assists. In July 2025, he made a high-profile move to Argentinos Juniors for a reported $1 million fee, signing a contract through 2029. During his time with Argentinos Juniors, he continued to refine his game, making 29 appearances and contributing a goal and an assist against top-tier competition.

For a Crew side battling in a competitive Eastern Conference after a rough start to the season that saw manager Henrick Rydström relieved of his duties, the addition of Giaccone provides invaluable depth and a fresh tactical wrinkle for interim head coach Laurent Courtois for the remainder of the 2026 campaign. With the team fighting to secure a position in the MLS Cup playoffs, Giaccone’s ability to play across the front line allows the coaching staff to rotate personnel without sacrificing offensive output.

Giaccone becomes the latest in a long line of successful Argentine players to don the Black & Gold’s kit, following in the footsteps of club legends like Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Lucas Zelarayán. If his track record in Argentina is any indication, Crew supporters can expect a technically gifted player who brings grit, flair and high soccer IQ to the pitch.
