Columbus Crew enter World Cup break with 2-0 win over Atlanta United

COLUMBUS – In their last match before the World Cup break, the Columbus Crew played their second and final match against the Five Stripes of Atlanta United in less-than-ideal conditions, which seem to be the norm when the visitors make the trek North. The difficult conditions proved no match for the Crew, as they controlled the first half with ease, showing their comfortability level go back to the way it was before to win 2-0.

With much controlled possession — sitting at 75% just half an hour in — Columbus had relentless opportunities. First was a left-footed shot from Diego Rossi that ricocheted off the post in the 18th minute. Five minutes later, the deadlock was broken, sparking a rejuvenated energy within the friendly confines of Scotts Miracle-Gro Field.

“Yeah, that felt really good. This stadium represents a lot for all of us. We wanted to make sure that before that break we were able to provide them a decent performance, the results that they want and show heart and personality. That’s what they did.” – Interim Head Coach Laurent Courtois

Sekou Bangoura notched his first goal in Black & Gold just 23 minutes in. It started at the opposite end, where Andre Gomes cleared an Atlanta United free kick, giving way to Bangoura to pounce on the ball to begin the 4-vs-1 opportunity. Rossi took the loose ball and began the run towards the Five Stripes’ back line, before finding Mohamed Farsi to his right. In turn, Farsi found a pocket of space in the middle of the penalty area, where Bangoura occupied for the easy tap-in.

Atlanta looked to capitalize on direct attacking opportunities, but lacked finishing capabilities in every aspect.

The Crew would find their second goal near the end of the first half through Rossi, tallying his sixth goal of the season. Farsi, yet again involved, slid a pass to Rossi, who made his central run towards the box in perfect time to take the shot one-time and get the ball past Hoyos. In his second start of the 2026 MLS season, Farsi’s performance was a vindication of what Columbus missed in those nine months that he was out. A quick spark of energy that can turn nothing into something.

In the second half, it was a different narrative. Columbus couldn’t find any outlet to get into their attacking third, resorting to hopeful vertical direct balls towards Rossi and Daniel Gazdag, hoping one of the two could get on the end of the attempt.

Atlanta United increased its defensive pressure, pinning the Black & Gold in their defensive half for the majority of the second frame. Multiple chances were generated for the visitors, but the fruition of one was moot.

Columbus would hold on to their 2-0 result, sending the Club into the World Cup break 2-0 across all competitions under interim head coach Laurent Courtois.
