RICHMOND, VA – The Columbus Crew handled their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup assignment with professionalism and authority, defeating the Richmond Kickers 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16.
While the final scoreline suggests a straightforward evening, the match opened with a brief moment of tension. Richmond nearly capitalized on a set piece in the seventh minute, forcing Columbus into emergency defending and a hurried clearance off the goal-line. It was the type of play that can tilt momentum in knockout competition.
Instead, it proved to be a wake-up call.
After the shaky start, Columbus began to assert its identity. The Crew tightened their spacing in the midfield, improved their tempo in possession, and stretched Richmond’s defensive line from flank to flank. The territorial advantage became overwhelming as the Black & Gold pinned the Kickers deep in their own half for extended stretches.
The breakthrough arrived in the latter minutes of the first half. Hugo Picard, who proved to be lively and decisive throughout the night, was able to tap-in a low-driven pass from Andres Herrera from the opposite flank to give the Black & Gold a deserved lead, just before halftime.
The second half followed alike, with Columbu managing the tempo intelligently, avoiding unnecessary risks which;e continuing to probe for another goal. Richmond attempted to falter Columbus by any means necessary, but the Crew’s composure on the ball neutralized those efforts quickly.
Picard was at the center of attention again, this time receiving a perfectly placed ball from Amar Sejdic to chip the Richmond keeper and double the Crew’s lead, and get his second career goal in a Crew uniform.
Jamal Thiaré delivered the final blow.
In the last quarter-hour of the match, Thiaré collected a through ball from Cesar Ruvalcaba and found himself alone in on goal. Thiaré rounded the Kickers net minder and fired home a left-footed shot to the top left corner to extend the lead to 3-0. The goal eliminated any remaining doubt and reflected the depth within the squad — a critical component during tournament play where rotation often tests cohesion.
Defensively, the Crew were disciplined after the early scare. The backline remained compact, limited second-ball opportunities, and prevented Richmond from generating clear-cut chances. What began with uncertainty evolved into a complete performance.
With the win, the Crew advance to the Round of 16 where they will host USL League 1 side One Knoxville. The Crew demonstrated both resilience and quality. In cup competition, professionalism is often the difference between progression and disappointment. However, on Wednesday night, the Black & Gold delivered exactly what was required.
