The Columbus Crew and Burnley F.C. played to a 1-1 draw in an international club friendly, giving both sides an opportunity to evaluate their squads while providing supporters with an entertaining matchup between MLS and English opposition.
Although the result carried no impact on the standings, the match featured a competitive tempo from the opening whistle. Columbus looked comfortable in possession for much of the contest, moving the ball efficiently through midfield while creating several promising opportunities in the attacking third. Burnley, meanwhile, remained organized defensively and threatened on the counterattack, forcing the Crew to stay disciplined at the back.
The breakthrough came courtesy of Daniel Gazdag in the 49th minute, who entered in the second half to showcase his attacking instincts in a Columbus uniform. After a patient buildup, Hugo Picard found space in the final third, backheeled to Gazdag in the penalty area, and allowed him to finish confidently for the opening goal. The strike rewarded Columbus for controlling possession for long stretches and appeared to put the hosts in position to secure a victory over their Premier League opposition.
With the lead in hand, Columbus continued to dictate much of the game’s rhythm, circulating possession and limiting Burnley’s opportunities to create sustained pressure. The Crew defense remained compact, breaking up attacks before they developed into dangerous scoring chances, while the midfield consistently disrupted Burnley’s attempts to play through the center of the pitch.
As the second half wore on, however, Burnley gradually increased its attacking pressure. The English side committed more players forward and began testing Columbus with quicker passing combinations and dangerous service into the penalty area. The Crew absorbed much of the pressure, but Burnley eventually found the breakthrough late in the second half, converting an opportunity to level the score at 1-1.
The equalizer denied Columbus what would have been an impressive friendly victory, but the performance still provided several encouraging takeaways. The Crew demonstrated composure in possession, generated quality attacking sequences, and continued to build chemistry throughout the lineup. Gazdag’s goal highlighted the offensive quality he brings to the club, while the defensive unit showed resilience for much of the evening against a talented European opponent.
For Burnley, the late equalizer served as a fitting reward for a persistent second-half effort, as the visitors finished the match strongly and ensured both clubs walked away with a share of the result.
Columbus will now shift its focus back to league play as the MLS season resumes. The Crew returns to action on July 22 when they host New York City FC, looking to carry the positives from their friendly performance into an important Eastern Conference matchup, before hosting rivals FC Cincinnati the following Saturday.
