Crew trio named to Team of the Matchday

The Columbus Crew celebrated another accomplishment this week, with a trio of members named to the Week 6 Team of the Matchday. Head coach Wilfried Nancy and midfielders Aidan Morris and Lucas Zelarayan were all named to the roster following the Black & Gold’s 4-0 win against over Real Salt Lake this past weekend.

This is Zelarayan’s second time being named to Team of the Matchday, with his first coming after his brace against D.C. United in Week 2. Zelarayan played a pivotal part in the win against RSL, setting up Morris for the first goal of the game with a backheel pass that put Columbus on the board. Zelarayan also got on the scoresheet himself, drawing a penalty minutes before halftime and converting the spot kick, calmly placing the ball to the lower right corner.

Morris, who now has three goals in two games, is starting to find a rhythm in Nancy’s system. With his two goals in the 4-0 win, the Orange County, Florida native is on pace to bet his personal goal of four goals and four assists. Getting the job done both offensively and defensively, Morris has shown that he can be dangerous on both sides of the ball. This is Morris’ second Team of the Matchday honor this season, with his first coming last week in the 6-1 against Atlanta United, where he earned a spot on the bench.

Nancy, who came to Columbus this offseason, has instilled an identity into this team, an identity in which one has not been seen before. Through just six games, Nancy has the Black & Gold sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, with a 3-1-2 record. Nancy has Columbus firing on all cylinders. The Crew has scored 10-goals in a two-game span, which is the most goals scored in back-to-back games in club history.

In addition, Nancy has Columbus attacking from the first minute to the last, with goals coming in the opening 15 minutes and in second half stoppage time in the last two games.

“This is something that every day and every week we push the players to control and stay on the task, and they’re playing really good on that, in terms of ‘Don’t think about the score,’ think about what we need to do offensively and defensively,” said Nancy.

Columbus looks to continue its hot scoring streak this weekend, as the Crew travels to the Nation’s Capital to take on D.C. United. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

  1. Massive Report team, thank you for continuing to cover our club. I know the situation with Vox was difficult, so it speaks well of all of you to continue your work. We appreciate it.

It’s great to see the current run of form. Now, we go back on the road where our results haven’t been as favorable. Have you heard if Nancy is planning to mix the lineups again?

Note: the white on black is hard to read.
