COLUMBUS – In a moment rich with nostalgia and reverence, the Columbus Crew have officially inducted Guillermo Barros Schelotto into the Club’s prestigious Circle Of Honor, ahead of their match against D.C. United. A legendary figure in Black & Gold history, Schelotto’s influence on the Club transcends statistics– his vision, creativity, and leadership helped redefine the Crew’s identity during his tenure from 2007 to 2010. Most notably, the Argentine maestro orchestrated the Club’s 2008 MLS Cup triumph, earning league MVP honors along the way. Now immortalized among Crew royalty, Schelotto’s induction celebrates not just a brilliant player, but a cultural icon who left an indelible mark on Columbus soccer.
The Columbus Crew celebrated itself with a 2-1 win over its MLS original counterparts, D.C. United with goals by Daniel Gazdag and Lassi Lapalainen.
Columbus controlled the first half in creating goal-scoring opportunities within the first 20 minutes of play, but could not convert any chances in the final third. Daniel Gazdag nearly got the Crew on the board in the 15th minute, but his attempt was easily claimed by D.C. goalkeeper Luis Barraza. Columbus had a big chance that they were able to capitalize on in the 30th minute when Gazdag was tripped inside the penalty area.
Diego Rossi gave way to Gazdag to take the spot kick, who converted the spot kick from 12 yards out to Barraza’s right. The goal would be Gazdag’s first for the Black & Gold since the Crew acquired the Hungarian in April.
While maintaining above 60% possession, the Crew were creating chances well beyond the scope of belief. However, the D.C. United held firm on defense, closing down passing lanes and forcing the Black & Gold to restart play.
Columbus carried the momentum into halftime, looking to seek out a win after having their five-game unbeaten streak snapped midweek.
D.C. United fired quick to start the second half, with Christian Benteke tallying the equalizer in the 47th minute off of a cross from the right flank.
The Black & Gold continued to pepper the United backline as time progressed in the second half. The Black & Gold found their go-ahead in the 78th minute, with Lassi Lappalainen scoring his first for the Crew. After the ball pinged around inside the 18-yard box, it fell to the right foot of the Finnish winger, who ripped his shot past Barraza.
D.C. United would finish the match with 10 men, with Aaron Herrera collecting a second yellow card late in the second half.
Columbus carried out the win, claiming all three points. The Crew still remains fourth place in the Eastern Conference, just three points off of the Philadelphia Union, who sit in first place.
