Jacen Russell-Rowe lifts Columbus Crew past New England Revolution 1-0

After their come-from-behind 4-2 win over the Chicago Fire last weekend, the Columbus Crew traveled to Foxborough to take on a new version of the New England Revolution.

With the Crew outscoring the Revolution 9-1 last season, head coach Caleb Porter said that the Crew “embarrassed us” and had high hopes coming into this matchup that the MLS original could knock off the Black & Gold in a true David vs. Goliath battle.

The first half was nothing short of dull, with both teams lacking a variety of chances to break even.

Columbus’ best chance came just after the quarter-hour mark when Aljaz Ivacic attempted a clearance from his own penalty area. However, he was met by the pressure of Jacen Russell-Rowe, who got in front of the attempt and gave the ball right back to the Revolution goalkeeper.

The Revolution caught the Crew sleeping on a free kick in the 24th minute when Leo Campana received a quick pass into the penalty area. His chip attempt was saved by Patrick Schulte, and the Crew were able to clear the danger.

With neither team finding the opening goal in the first half, the second 45 minutes would determine the final result of the match.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to break the ice, as Jacen Russell-Rowe scored his second goal of the 2025 campaign in as many games.

Mo Farsi dribbled toward the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute before finding his long Columbus Crew 2 teammate with a square ball to his left. Russell-Rowe took one touch into the penalty area and hit his shot with his weaker left foot past Ivacic to give Columbus the 1-0 lead.

Columbus continued the pressure on the Revolution, with Max Arfsten nearly making it 2-0 after AZ Jackson found the former San Jose Earthquakes II product out wide. The ensuing shot ricocheted off the far post and out for a goal kick. Just minutes later, Dylan Chambost had a shot on goal from distance that challenged Ivacic, but the Revolution keeper was quick to recover.

The Revolution thought they had a golden ticket late in the second half when Dylan Chambost was whistled for a handball offense inside of the penalty area off of a free kick. After a video review, the handball was overturned with Columbus maintaining their 1-0 lead, thus ensuring all three points were secured for the Crew.

Jacen Russell-Rowe show

After a noticeable improvement last year, Jacen Russell-Rowe is starting to show why head coach Wilfried Nancy has put his faith in him being the next star striker. Scoring Saturday night against the Revolution, the Canadian forward has scored in each league match for the Black & Gold.
