The Columbus Crew has traded wing back Will Sands and $600,000 of General Allocation money (GAM) to the New England Revolution in exchange for defender Dejuan Jones, sources confirmed to Massive Report Tuesday evening.
Jones, 27, entered his sixth season with the Revolution in 2024, playing in 142 games and over 11,000 minutes. The Lansing, Michigan native has just two assists so far this season, in 17 games (16 starts). Jones currently shares the single-season New England record for assists by a defender — seven — with teammate Brandon Bye.
Capped eight times by the United States Men’s National Team, Jones got his first appearance for the Stars & Stripes in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, making four appearances and notching two assists. He earned his first international call-up in January of 2023.
The Revolution defender, who can play left or right back, added eight additional starts to his resume in the MLS Cup playoffs, helping guide the Revolution to the postseason in four of the last five years.
Selected 11th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, Jones was one of only three defenders to tally five assists in each of the previous three seasons entering 2024.
Sands, 24, has featured in 25 matches for the Crew, recording 1378 minutes. Sands was a prominent feature in the club’s recent 4-1 win against Aston Villa this past weekend. Sands, hailing from Rye, New York has recorded three assists in his three year tenure with the Black & Gold. Sands has played 255 minutes in six games (four starts) for the Crew this season.
“On behalf of everyone at the Club, we would like to thank Will for his contributions to the Crew these past three years. Will is a resilient competitor, and we wish him all the best as he begins this next chapter of his career,” said Columbus Crew General Manager Issa Tall.
An ACL injury suffered in April 2023 saw Sands miss most of the season, including MLS Cup playoffs where the Crew was crowned champions after a 2-1 win against LAFC. The injury occurred in the Crew’s 1-0 loss to Charlotte FC on Matchday 9.
“We consistently strie to enhance our roster by adding players with specific profiles and positional flexibility, and DeJuan has the skillset and versatility we desire within our style of play,” Tall said.
“DeJuan has gained quality experience with New England and with the U.S. Men’s National Team. He has proven his ability to defend and create chances in the attack from both sides of the pitch, and his additon to our roster will help with our goal to consistently contend for championships. We know DeJuan can continue to elevate his game with our Club and our commitment to player development.”
