Crew extend road win streak with 3-2 win over New York City FC

After a week off of MLS play, the Columbus Crew were back in action on the road yet again to take on New York City FC, a red hot team that finds themselves in the top half of the Eastern Conference. With Columbus leading the series 9-8-6 (W-L-T), it’s worth noting that Yankee Stadium has not been kind to the Black & Gold, as the Crew have only two points in nine trips to the Bronx.

Columbus would start the attack early in the fourth minute when Cucho Hernandez took a shot from just inside the 18-yard box, but was saved by City goalkeeper Matt Freese. Just a minute later, Diego Rossi was able to dribble past two defenders and have his take on goal, but his attempt was just wide. Max Arfsten followed the play up at the back post, and his shot was saved by the leg of Freese to keep the score knotted at 0-0.

In the 17th minute, Yevhen Cheberko found Hernandez running towards goal with a high ball that found the foot of the Colombian forward. Hernandez had a shot on goal that was easily saved by Freese, while under pressure from Strahinja Tanasijevic.

New York City had a great opportunity in the 31st minute when Santiago Rodriguez had his shot ring off the post and stay out to keep the score 0-0.

In the latter stages of the first half, Mitja Ilenic saw himself dismissed from the proceedings after he took down Christian Ramirez who was in on goal. The red card would see the home side play with one less player for the remainder of the match.

The Pigeons would get the breakthrough in the 44th minute when Agustin Ojeda ripped a shot past Patrick Schulte, giving City a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

Columbus had one final chance in the 49th minute when Hernandez crossed a ball to the back post towards Arfsten, but the header was easily claimed by Freese.

The Crew would get things started yet again in the second half, when it took less than five minutes for Christian Ramirez to find the equalizer after calmly placing the ball past Freese. Just minutes later, Freese would make his ninth save of the game, but would spill the ball inside his own six-yard box, only to find it in the back of the net after Mohamed Farsi would pounce to double the score for Columbus.

In the 65th minute, Hernandez converted a penalty kick after a video review for a foul inside the box prior.

City was down but not out in the 86th minute when Rodriguez was the recipient of a ball over top and dribbled around Schulte to comfortably pull the home side within one goal.

It wouldn’t be enough as the Crew held on for the 3-2 win, extending their road win streak to four games and ending City’s five game win streak.
