The Columbus Crew take on the Houston Dynamo in the first leg of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup in the Round of 16, making their first appearance in the tournament this year. The Crew earned a first-round bye into the Round of 16 by capturing the 2023 MLS Cup. Columbus last appeared in the Concacaf Champions Cup (formerly Concacaf Champions League) in 2021 after winning the 2020 MLS Cup.
Columbus drew Houston, after the Dynamo took down St. Louis CITY SC in the first round, advancing on away goals (2-1). Houston also had a league match over the weekend, facing off against the New York Red Bulls, where the Orange & Black couldn’t pull out three points.
While Columbus didn’t play in the first round, the Crew did have a league match against Minnesota United this past weekend, ending in a 1-1 draw. Cucho Hernandez scored in the 59th minute to give the Crew a 1-0 lead, but was then washed away from a second-half stoppage time equalizer from Tani Oluwaseyi.
The last time these two teams met in all competitions came last year toward the end of the MLS regular season when the Crew traveled down to Houston for a midweek matchup. The Dynamo took all three points, defeating the Black & Gold by a 2-0 scoreline.
Between the two Clubs, both teams share an 8-11-8 (W-T-L) record all-time.
With both teams having a weekend matchup, both coaches could heavily rotate their squads. Columbus could see the likes of new goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen and Taha Habroune make an appearance, while Ben Olsen looks to match the style of Wilfried Nancy, to pull out a win of his own with his rotated squad.
With the Concacaf Champions Cup now in play, here is all the information you need to know regarding the match.
